Anticipation

There’s joy in traveling. How vast is the world yet few ever leave their own city. Knowing me, I would never feel fulfilled without at least trying to see as much as I can. To me, it would be a life wasted. Leon McCarron, in Into the Empty Quarter, journeyed into the worlds largest sand desert for 1,000 miles. There was a pivotal moment in the midst of the trek, that McCarron questions why he does this. Why can’t he just be normal like everyone else. That struck a bell. What is it that’s so unfulfilling about staying in one place?

Peace be the journey. That’s what it’s about though right? The journey. There’s more too it than simply the destination. More to it than scratching off something on a bucket list. Its the entire experience. A trip doesn’t begin when you set foot on the trail. It begins long before. Before you pack, before you plan. It begins when you hear or see of a place and that image in your mind forms, if even for the briefest of seconds. Ambiguous at first. Sort of lofty. A small inkling that perhaps there is something out there. Then, that thought takes root in your mind. It wells up in your soul that this, this is something you could do. This is something you want to do. Want is a strong word. We want many things. We, as people, are good at acting on what we want. That wisp of thought develops slowly. Churning. Molding. Taking shape. Evolving. Rigid structures begin to form as plans are made and that spark becomes reality. It’s real. It’s going to happen. It’s your creation. This plan. It lives and breathes, fueled by your anticipation. Hope. That yearning for adventure and the unknowns that could still occur. What spontaneity could make lasting memories. Could change your life. Could change the depths of your soul. We love new things. Nothing is quite like having  a new toy and this precious plan is very new. Untouched and still developing. That’s why its part of the journey. Its unpredictable and evolves on its own. So I indulge in it. I crave it. I love it.
