Fisher Towers

TL;DR

If you feel like taking a scenic drive along the Colorado and enjoy watching the light play on red rock sand stone, then I recommend you pay Fisher Towers a visit. A short hike takes you around the several towers and a wonderful middle of no-where feel campsite to enjoy the desert night sky.

Where we hiked: Fisher Towers Trail Where we camped: Fisher Towers Campground (only 5 sites!) When did we go: October 2015

 Thoughts

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not. ” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

What makes something beautiful? When I first came out to Utah, I found it beautiful because it was different. The red rock was a sharp contrast to the pale greyish blue granite of Yosemite and the desert landscape the polar opposite of the Pacific Coast redwoods. But as we explored more and more of the area. I had to rethink why I found it beautiful. Because it was more than just being different, there was something more intrinsic. More than just the colors, more than the forms, the smell of the air. It’s what makes us stop and breathe. To close our eyes, thank God, and try to capture that moment with our entire being.

Following the advice from my aunt, we made an impromptu visit to Fisher Towers, just slightly north east of Moab off highway 128 which runs along the Colorado River. If you get lucky, there are 5 so campsites first-come-first-serve right next to the parking lot. If not, there are a handful of BLM campsites along highway 128. If you have time, Fisher Towers is definitely something special. Its a highly frequented climbing spot and also has a moderate hike that wraps around the base of the towers and provides some amazing views. We started the hike late in the afternoon, passed the viewpoint for Titan, the tallest tower, and decided to carry on to the end of the hike.

After wrapping around the base of Titan, the trail curves back out to give you a view of the entire amphitheater that the towers form. You’re greeted by a nice wooden sign and a spectacular rock to sit on and enjoy not only the towers, but a lovely view of the canyon the Colorado River snakes through.

We decided to stay for sunset so D could grab some photos. I was also sure to take some because the lighting during golden hour on the towers was incredible. Highly, highly recommend visiting this place. If you have ever read the King Killer Chronicles, this is was I imagine Myr Tariniel looks like for some reason. Its nothing like I had ever seen before. It was beautiful.
