logistics & itinerary

Wilderness Area : Redwood National Park

When did we do this hike? December 2018

Transportation: Arrived early enough to get a parking space at Prairie Creek Visitors Center.

Water: There were a few creeks where we could have filled up water or at Gold Bluffs Beach Campground. Filter or treat all water.

Leave-No-Trace: Follow Leave No Trace principles. Do all washing at least 100 feet from water. Do not put any soup in water (even biodegradable and natural soup pollutes). Carry out all trash. Do not burn or bury toilet paper or trash.

Flora Considerations: Look out for poison oak.

Fauna Considerations: Although these animals are uncommonly seen, it is possible to observe bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, black bears, and some of the smaller mesocarnivores including fisher, gray fox, and mink. Deer and elk can be seen roaming the meadows.

Trail Specific Considerations: Trails and rocks can be slick due to rain or fog. Seasonal bridges are not in place during the winter so expect to be walking through some water. Check current conditions before you go. Like any wilderness trip, you accept a certain amount of risk when going on your hike. You are responsible for assessing how comfortable you feel with that risk and understanding your own physical abilities.
